It's Back to School time for the Children of the Holy Land
August 2000 issue of "Serve Help Aid Rescue Educate" (S.H.A.R.E.), A periodic newsletter published by The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development
Dispossession, displacement, and harsh conditions for over a half of the century have deprived the children of Palestine the tools necessary for growth and stability. In the camps of Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine, over 50% of the population are under the age of 16 and consequently, these children live in a state of severe poverty and vulnerability. There is nothing that sustains these victims of survival other than family, community solidarity, and ofcourse menial jobs that are unfit for any child. In a society where the average annua; income is measured at US$145 a month, it is no wonder that children opt for the work force to aid their families rather than attending school for future empowerment. Further, there are many children who simply cannot attend school due to ever-increasing expenses of uniforms, books, or even shoes.
A backdrop to this bleak picture is anticipating the residual effects of a future where tens of thousands are uneducated because they must address their immediate family needs.
The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development has made it our goal to empower these children through our 'Back to School and Stay in School' sponsorship programs which ease the financial burdens faced by their families. Before the school year begins, our in-country social workers conduct the necessary field research and locate the most vulnerable children waiting for a donor to provide the hope they so deserve. Once identified, these children become Holy Land Foundation Children, and hence, start off on the right foot for a challenging school year and a brighter future!
Back to School: Your one time gift of US$150 per student makes it possible for thousands of children in Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine to start the school year with uniforms, shoes, backpacks, books and other essential supplies.
Stay in School: For US$35 a month or US$420 a year, you can provide financial aid to students who would otherwise sacrifice an education.
